The computed tomography produces very fast slices of almost all organs with a high precision of the details. This modality is an advancement of the conventional X-ray, X-ray-tubes turn around the patient and provide exact slices. After the exam the images can be processed and e.g. 3D animations, bone- or vessel-images can be created.
In certain questions the use of a special contrast medium with iodine is necessary that will be injected in an arm vein. This contrast media is not suitable for patients with known allergies against the contrast media, with hyperthyroidism or an advanced renal damage.
Pregnant women should receive a CT only in exceptional cases.
The whole examination time is depending on the clinical question between 5 and 20 minutes.
